Vote for

Joe Maloney

District 2 Legislator

November 2, 2021 General Election Date

JOE MALONEY, is a lifelong County resident, husband and father of four,

small business owner and community volunteer from a working family.

Joe is running to go back to the Ulster County Legislature to continue working for all of us to

support our community and county.

What Makes Joe Different?

Humble Beginnings - My parents started a family young. Raised in a local trailer park, it took effort and determination to make ends meet. Taking turns working and being home for my siblings and I, my parents instilled in us to take nothing for granted. I know life isn’t always easy.

Not a Career Politician – Elected office is not a career. I promise to be a public servant. To serve you, not gain and position my future with the status your vote gave me. I will not accept donations. I answer to you, not special interest.

Fighting Hard - No one will fight harder for the people. I've proved it! If you are an elected official and not taking public arrows from the establishment and local elites... then "small is the work that you have done".

GOALS: Improve the quality of life and prosperity of all in the community with fairness and equity...

  • Tax Relief - Saugerties deserves a larger percentage of the County's sales tax revenue. Promote instituting a County-wide assessment and oversee a bipartisan resolution that distributes the fair share of 'bed tax' equally to all municipalities.

  • Healthcare - Convene a County/Town Healthcare Consortium to lower costs for towns.

  • Housing - Propose sensible regulation and tax options on short-term rentals, AIRBNBs, and explore realistic solutions to the affordable housing and rental crisis. Those visiting our area should pay their fair share in helping maintain our community, it shouldn't be burdened solely by the local taxpayer.

  • Lower Esopus - Enter into serious negotiations with the NYC DEP to ensure a non-chemical based filtration system to bring an end to the turbidity affecting shoreline communities, tourism, fisheries and local businesses.

  • Environment - Promote composting and recycling as viable alternatives to the County's waste stream fostering voluntary compliance with reducing the volume by raising the tipping fees.  Improve and add to the use of plastics prohibitions currently on the County books.

WHY I WANT
TO RETURN

"I'm running to represent Saugerties in District 2, County Legislator, because it breaks my heart to think that not so far in the distant future, my 4 children may have to choose between affordable living, career opportunities and remaining in the town they grew up in and love. Watching my future grandchildren grow up from afar drives me to fight for real solutions to our growing housing crisis, invest in real and lasting infrastructure upgrades and innovative solutions to attract and keep the kinds of industries and jobs that help keep our Saugerties raised college and trade school graduates here at home. And maybe most importantly of all, to make Saugerties and the County of Ulster a place the whole country looks to in regards to the Environment - Compostable, Renewable, Reusable needs to become our mantra."

Watershed.jpg

Watershed

Around 2005, the NYC DEP stopped using alum (aluminum sulfate) to filter the dirty water kept in the West Basin of the Ashokan Reservoir. From that point forward, they release that "dirty water" into the lower Esopus… effecting our wildlife and property. 50% of NYC's water comes from the Catskill reservoir system. They currently pump over 1B gallons per day. While there are benefits to having a large reservoir north of us in regard to Mountain runoff and storms... we cannot continue to sit idly by while our local waterways and property owners suffer. There are options. NYC needs to do better.

Term Limits

August 14th 2019

"I ran on Term Limits and promised the people of Saugerties I would ensure their implementation. And on August 14th, 2019 Ulster County signed a bill creating term limits for Ulster County elected officials: Legislators (no more that six 2 year terms); Executive & Comptroller (no more than three 4 year terms). The path to this victory created a lot of first: it was the first Veto Over-ride in County history where the Ulster County Legislature imposed on the then Executive and we are now the third County in the State that has imposed REAL term limits. It was/is my proudest moment as a Legislator for the people of Ulster County."
